Early Literacy through Reading Corners

All children, regardless of their age, deserve access to books. Books are essential for developing early literacy skills, fostering a love for learning, enhancing communication and language abilities, and expanding their imagination and understanding of the world. Reading, or being read to, not only strengthens concentration skills but also offers a source of relaxation and enjoyment.

Unfortunately, many children in marginalized communities face a severe lack of access to reading materials. To address this, our partner Masikhule is committed to introducing young children to the wonderful world of books by installing reading corners in all the Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers they mentor.

Each reading corner will be thoughtfully designed to include a diverse selection of age- and language-appropriate books, and items that make the reading experience even more pleasurable and inviting. These spaces will feature comfortable cushions, mats, blankets, and soft toys to create a homely and enticing environment for young readers.
